Frederic Remington made this color lithograph of a trapper from a pastel drawing, and it was published in New York in 1901 by R.H. Russell. It appeared as plate 6 in *A Bunch of Buckskins*, a book of Remington's Western images issued that same year. By 1901 the fur trade that once drew trappers deep into the Rocky Mountains had largely passed, so Remington's image looks back on a vanished way of life. The horse beside the figure reflects the importance of animals to frontier travel and work. Remington, who spent much of his life in the West, became one of the best-known painters and illustrators of its people and landscapes.
