Catalogers gave this color lithograph the bracketed title "A Breed," so the name comes from a reference source rather than the print itself. The image reproduces a pastel drawing by Frederic Remington and appeared as plate 3 in *A Bunch of Buckskins*, published in New York by R.H. Russell. Its subjects are Native American figures and horses of the American West, a pairing that runs through much of Remington's work from his years traveling the frontier in the 1880s and 1890s. Seen as a color reproduction, the piece shows how his pastel handling translated into printed form.
