Remington's pastel of an aging man named Ramon was reproduced here as a color lithograph, a process that let his western figures reach a wide readership at a time when many Americans knew the frontier mainly through illustrations. The print was published by R.H. Russell in New York in 1901 and appeared as plate 4 in *A Bunch of Buckskins*, a book of Remington's western sketches. Its subject, a man with a horse, reflects the artist's interest in the working life of the Southwest and its ranch hands, a theme he returned to throughout his career.
