Few subjects were more central to the frontier army than the pack mule, and this print turns to the soldier who managed the animals. Frederic Remington made it as a color lithograph from one of his pastel drawings, and R.H. Russell published it in New York in 1901 as plate 2 of *A Bunch of Buckskins*. Packers loaded and led mule trains that carried supplies where wagons could not go, so their work was essential to army campaigns in the West. Remington, who spent much time among soldiers and scouts, drew such figures with close attention to their gear and their daily labor.
