Rendered in pastel and reproduced as a color lithograph, this portrait shows a Sioux chief in traditional dress, with horses in the West setting that the subject headings note. Frederic Remington (1861–1909) built his reputation on images of the frontier, and R.H. Russell published this one in New York in 1901 as plate 8 of *A Bunch of Buckskins*. The title came from a reference source, so the sitter is not identified, and the picture is best read as an illustration of how Remington's frontier subjects reached eastern readers.
