Remington drew this Cheyenne man in pastel, and the color lithograph reproduces that drawing with its horses and western setting intact. Russell published it in New York in 1901 as plate 5 of *A Bunch of Buckskins*, a book that gathered Remington's work for a popular audience. By then the Cheyenne were living on reservations in Oklahoma and Montana, while Remington's pictures often looked back to the mounted plains warrior of the 1870s and 1880s. The print is worth reading as both a record of his method and a romantic image of the frontier.
