Titled simply "A cavalry officer," this color lithograph reproduces a pastel drawing by Frederic Remington, whose record does not identify the sitter. Published in New York in 1901 by R.H. Russell, it was issued as plate 7 in *A Bunch of Buckskins*, a book that gathered Remington's frontier illustrations. By then Remington was known for depicting the U.S. Army's mounted troops and the horses that carried them across the West in the decades after the Civil War. Pastel was an unusual medium for work meant for mass reproduction, so the print preserves the softer, textured color of the original drawing.
