The title's plain wording, "The Navy put 'em across," points to the job the sea services did in getting American soldiers to France. From 1917 to 1918, the United States Navy escorted troop transports and ran convoys over the Atlantic, where German U-boats threatened shipping. Destroyers screened the merchant and troop ships, and moving the Expeditionary Forces overseas became one of the Navy's central contributions to the war. Images like this one often carried that message to people at home.
