Few posters on this board speak so directly to one audience. This lithograph targets Britons living in the United States, urging them to "come across" and enlist. It was issued by the British and Canadian Recruiting Mission, which worked in American cities during the war to reach the many men born in Britain and Canada who had settled abroad. The handshake at its center was a common wartime device, suggesting a personal appeal and comradeship. The poster shows how overseas recruiting framed national duty for emigrants far from home.
