Few recruiting posters from the First World War carry a signature as recognizable as J.C. Leyendecker's, and this 1917 lithograph shows why the Navy turned to him. The U.S. Navy Publicity Bureau in New York credited him for the design and had it reproduced by the Beck Engraving Co. Its short command, "America calls," was aimed at young men in the year the United States entered the war. Leyendecker, already famous for magazine covers and advertising illustration, brought a polished, idealized style to the effort. The poster shows how the government relied on commercial illustrators to make military service look appealing.
