All together! Enlist in the Navy" is a direct call to join as a group, and its 1917 date places it in the months after the United States entered the First World War in April of that year. The Navy expanded quickly during the war, and color lithograph posters like this one were a main way it reached young men in towns and cities far from the coast. Such posters were printed in large runs and displayed in post offices, storefronts and public buildings, so they reached many people who never saw a recruiting office. The subject headings also note sailors of the 1910s, a reminder that the poster was selling a specific picture of naval service to its audience.
