Its slogan, "Join the Navy: America's new prestige in world affairs will mean a greater Navy," ties recruiting directly to the country's postwar ambitions rather than to wartime urgency alone. Herbert Paus's color lithograph carries the line "America advances," a phrase that casts service as participation in national progress. The Navy had expanded sharply during the First World War, and the Naval Act of 1916 had already authorized a large building program, so posters like this one were trying to keep enlistment strong as the fighting ended. The Library of Congress holds the print, which came from the Rehse Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik collection.
