The torpedo that dominates this 1917 Navy recruiting poster by Babcock signals the message in its title, "the service for fighting men," by tying enlistment to the weapons and dangers of modern sea combat. The United States had entered the First World War in April 1917, and the Navy needed to expand quickly to meet the threat of German submarine attacks on Atlantic shipping. Posters like this one were displayed in post offices, train stations and recruiting offices to persuade young men that naval service offered skill, danger and a direct role in the fight. Its bold color lithography also reflects the commercial art style of the period, when illustrators brought advertising techniques to wartime mobilization.
