From the residence of R.B. Woodward, this stereograph looks out over San Francisco toward Rincon Hill, a bluff southeast of downtown that was home to many of the city's wealthy families in the 1860s. Published around 1866 as number 426 in the Gems of California Scenery series, it was meant to be viewed alongside a companion image, but the Library holds only this half of the pair. Rincon Hill was largely leveled in the decades after, so the slopes and rooftops shown here no longer exist in this form. The caption data comes from an older card and has not been fully verified.
