This half of a stereograph looks south from the residence of R.B. Woodward, a view of a private home in a city that was still rebuilding its identity after the Gold Rush. Woodward later became known for Woodward's Gardens, a popular pleasure ground in San Francisco, so the house he lived in offers a glimpse of the man before his public project. Stereoscopic views like this one were sold in matched pairs and viewed through a hand-held stereoscope, which gave parlor audiences a sense of depth and made distant or local scenes feel close. The library holds only one card from its pair, so the image is best read as a single record of the city's residential streets in the mid-1860s.
