Taken from the grounds of R.B. Woodward's residence, this half stereograph looks east across San Francisco from a higher vantage point than most street-level views of the period. It was published in 1866 as number 418 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. The Library of Congress holds only this one card from the pair, which was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. Albumen prints like this were the standard medium of the 1860s, and by then the city's steep hills were filling with houses, which made views from private property a popular subject. The details come from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
