A private house in San Francisco, the residence of R.B. Woodward, is the subject of this view, which the Library holds as one half of a stereograph. It was published in 1866 as number 421 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical exposures merged into a single three-dimensional scene, a popular parlor entertainment in the 1860s. Woodward is better known for the pleasure garden he developed in the city's Mission district, so the house offers a glimpse of the private life behind that public venture.
