Lawrence W. Coe's house stands at the corner of Harrison and Essex streets on Rincon Hill, a detail that places this view in a specific San Francisco neighborhood rather than a general scene. In the 1850s and 1860s the hill rose just south of downtown and was one of the city's most fashionable residential districts, with substantial homes on its slopes overlooking the bay. The card comes from a series called *Gems of California Scenery*, whose paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Only one half of the pair is held here, and the caption details are unverified, but the view offers a useful glimpse of a neighborhood that was later largely cut down by grading.
