The subject is a private residence on the southwest corner of Sutter and Gough streets in San Francisco, rather than a civic landmark or busy street scene. Published around 1866 as number 485 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, it is only one half of a stereographic pair, so the Library holds a single print of an image meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Stereographs like this were sold widely in the 1860s and gave viewers far from California a glimpse of a city growing quickly after the Gold Rush. The caption details come from an older card and have not been independently verified.
