The wood engraving shows the execution of James P. Casey and Charles Cora in front of the Vigilance Committee's rooms in San Francisco. The events leading to it began on the corner of Montgomery and Washington Streets, where Casey shot James King of William, the editor whose newspaper had attacked Casey's record. Cora, who had shot U.S. Marshal William Richardson, was hanged alongside Casey in late May 1856, after the committee had taken control of the city's justice. The print appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* that July, carrying the scene to readers well beyond California.
