Few houses in this photograph's period were as tied to the city's growth as the Peter Donahue residence at the corner of Bryant and Second Streets. Donahue was a Scottish-born machinist and ironworks founder who helped build San Francisco's street railways and industry. This view is one half of a stereographic pair issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and its survival as a single print is what makes it notable. Published around 1866, it shows a substantial private home on a corner south of Market Street, in a city still rebuilding after the fires of the 1850s. The catalog record's date and caption details come from old card information and have not been fully verified.
