Second Street, seen from the crest of Rincon Hill, shows a city street running down toward the bay at a time when the hill was one of San Francisco's most fashionable residential districts. The print is one half of a stereographic pair issued in the Gems of California Scenery series, and the Library holds only this half, so it is best viewed as a single image rather than in three dimensions. Albumen prints like this were the standard medium for stereo views of the 1860s, prized in parlors for their fine detail. The 1866 date comes from the caption card and is unverified, so treat it as approximate.
