Second Street, where it meets Market, is the subject of this half of a stereographic pair, numbered 552 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series. The Library holds only one of the two images, so the view survives as a single print rather than the matched pair that, seen through a stereoscope, once produced a sense of depth. Albumen prints like this were the standard medium for stereographs of the 1860s, and series like this one sold city and landscape views to a public eager for images of a fast-growing Pacific port. Market Street was the city's main avenue, so a view at its junction with Second offers a glimpse of the street life and commerce of the period.
