Market Street ran straight down toward the Ferry Building, and this stereograph captures that long view as it appeared around 1892. Stereo cards like this one were made to be seen through a hand viewer, so the two slightly offset images fused into a single scene with depth, letting viewers feel they were standing on the street. Underwood & Underwood, the firm credited on the card, was one of the largest publishers of these views in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The record notes that its caption details are old and unverified, so the exact date and specifics are worth checking against other sources.
