Third Street, seen from Market Street, survives as one half of a stereograph, catalogued as number 555 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the Library holds only that half of the pair. Market Street was the main thoroughfare of a city that had grown quickly after the Gold Rush, so views like this one record a busy, still-developing downtown. Albumen prints such as this were mounted on card and viewed through a stereoscope, a popular parlor pastime in the 1860s. The 1866 date comes from unverified caption information, so it is worth confirming against other sources.
