Market Street, photographed from the corner of Stockton Street and looking west, was one of San Francisco's main commercial thoroughfares, and this view captures it in the mid-1860s. The Library holds only one half of a stereographic pair from the Gems of California Scenery series, number 508, so the image was meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Albumen prints like this were popular parlor entertainment at the time, and the street scene offers a glimpse of a city still rebuilding after the fires of the 1850s. The 1866 date comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified.
