California Street, seen from the corner of Stockton Street and looking east, is a stereograph half that once formed one card of a stereoscopic pair, issued in the series "Gems of California Scenery" as number 354. Only this left-hand or single print survives in the Library's holdings, so the depth effect the viewer would have seen through a stereoscope is not preserved here. Published around 1866, it shows a city still rebuilding its identity after the Gold Rush boom, when stereoviews of San Francisco streets were popular souvenirs sold to visitors and armchair travelers alike. The record's details are drawn from an old caption card and have not been independently verified.
