Mission Street wharf is the subject here, one half of a stereograph pair issued as number 305 in a series called Gems of California Scenery. Viewed together through a stereoscope, the two slightly offset images gave a parlor audience a sense of depth. Albumen prints like this one were a popular way to show San Francisco's busy waterfront, where wharves and piers handled shipping and cargo during the city's rapid growth after the gold rush. The Library holds only one photograph from the pair, and its date rests on an old caption card that has been revised over time.
