The steamer Ajax, a Honolulu vessel, lies at the Greenwich Street wharf in San Francisco, and this albumen print records that working waterfront. In the 1860s the port and the Hawaiian Islands were linked by a steady Pacific trade in passengers, mail, sugar and goods, so the ship stands for a route that tied California to the islands. The Library holds only one half of a stereograph pair issued in the Gems of California Scenery series, number 322. The 1866 date comes from an unverified caption card, so it should be read with some care. Stereo views like this were sold widely and gave viewers the feeling of standing on the docks.
