Bush Street between Montgomery and Sansome is the subject here, with the Occidental and Cosmopolitan hotels marking the block. Published around 1866, the view comes from a stereograph series titled *Gems of California Scenery*, and this print is only one half of a stereo pair. Viewed through a stereoscope with its partner image, the two pictures produced a single three-dimensional scene. By the mid-1860s San Francisco was rebuilding and growing rapidly after the Gold Rush, and its hotels and commercial streets drew both travelers and residents. The picture offers a glimpse of that busy downtown when the city was still establishing its identity.
