The entrance to the Lick House on Montgomery Street, San Francisco, is the subject of this view, showing the hotel's street-level doorway and the commercial frontage around it. James Lick, a piano maker who became a wealthy land investor, backed the hotel, which was among the more elaborate hotels in a city still growing quickly after the Gold Rush. This print is one half of a stereographic pair from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. The record's date of 1866 is unverified, but it places the image in the decade when such cards were a popular way to show American cities to viewers far away.
