The building on Battery Street was one of the federal offices that served San Francisco's busy port, where the post office and the customs house shared space in a city that had grown quickly after the 1849 gold rush. Stereographs like this one were sold in pairs, and the Library holds only the left-eye half of this view, which was issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series around 1866. Buildings such as this one show how the young city was setting up the government institutions that handled its mail and its import trade. The image is a useful record of the street's architecture and daily commerce in the 1860s.
