Taken from the Lincoln School House, this view looks along Powell Street in San Francisco, offering a rare elevated look at a growing city in the mid-1860s. It is one half of a stereograph, a paired-image card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect, a format that was enormously popular in that period. The card is numbered 504 in the *Gems of California* series, and albumen prints like this one were the standard way such scenes were reproduced at the time. Only one half of the original pair is held here, and the date and caption details come from an old card that has not been fully verified.
