This stereograph shows Powell Street as it ran north from California Street, climbing a steep grade in a San Francisco that was still a young city by the standards of the American West. It is one half of a stereoscopic pair, issued as number 131 in a series called *Gems of California Scenery*, and the Library holds only this side of the pair. Albumen prints like this one, mounted on card and viewed through a stereoscope, were a popular way for nineteenth-century viewers to see distant places in three dimensions. The record dates it to 1866, though that date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
