Francisco Street, in the North Beach district of San Francisco, is the subject of this view from the *Gems of California Scenery* series, numbered 120. The Library of Congress holds only one half of the stereographic pair, printed in albumen, the egg-white and silver process that dominated photographic printing in the 1860s. Such views were meant to be seen through a stereoscope, which gave city streets a sense of depth and made them popular in parlors. The caption data comes from an old card and has not been verified, so the exact date and vantage point should be read with some caution.
