Congregation Emanu-El's temple on Sutter Street is the subject of this stereograph view, one half of a pair issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series as number 233. The congregation, founded in the early 1850s during the Gold Rush boom, was among the first Reform Jewish communities in the American West, and its house of worship stood as a visible sign of the city's growing Jewish population. Stereo views like this one were sold to middle-class households, so the picture offers a sense of how San Francisco presented itself to outside viewers in the 1860s. The Library's record gives the publication date as 1866, though it notes that the caption data is unverified.
