Few views from this period show a Jewish house of worship as part of an everyday street scene, and this one looks across Union Square toward the synagogue on Sutter Street. The print is one half of a stereographic pair, made to be seen through a stereoscope so the street appeared to have depth. It belongs to the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and its albumen process was the common photographic method of the 1860s. The view offers a glimpse of a rapidly growing city in the years after the Gold Rush, when San Francisco was building the churches and public spaces that marked its permanence.
