From a window or rooftop at the Eureka theater, this view looks south down Montgomery Street, the main commercial thoroughfare of San Francisco's business district in the 1860s. The Library holds only one half of a stereographic pair, issued as number 147 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, so the second image that gave the scene its depth is missing. Viewed through a stereoscope, such cards let armchair viewers feel they were standing on the busy street. The record's date of 1866 comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified.
