Pine Street from Taylor, looking west, shows a steep San Francisco block at a time when the city was still reshaping itself after the gold rush boom of the late 1840s and 1850s. The Library holds only one half of this stereographic pair, issued in the Gems of California Scenery series as number 228. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical exposures fused into a single image with apparent depth, a popular parlor entertainment in the 1860s. The albumen print, made on paper coated with egg white and silver salts, gives the view its warm brown tone.
