Franklin Street, seen from the west, leads to the Ladies' Protection and Relief Society building, a charitable institution in San Francisco that offered shelter and aid to women and children in a city still crowded with Gold Rush newcomers. This half stereograph is one of a pair issued in the Gems of California Scenery series, and when viewed through a stereoscope, the two images merged into a single three-dimensional scene. Published around 1866, the view captures the city in the years after California statehood, when San Francisco was growing quickly.
