Sacramento Street, looking west from Montgomery Street, captures a busy stretch of downtown San Francisco in the mid-1860s. The Library holds only one half of a stereograph pair, issued as number 116 in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, so the print was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect. Albumen prints like this were popular in the 1860s, when parlor viewers brought city scenes and landscapes into American homes. The city had been rebuilt after the fires of 1851 and 1856, and streets like this one document that recovery. The 1866 date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified.
