The west side of Montgomery Street between Pine and California, with the Odd Fellows Hall standing among its neighbors, captures the commercial core of San Francisco in the years after the Gold Rush. Montgomery was the city's main thoroughfare for banks, merchants and offices, and fraternal lodges like the Odd Fellows were central to civic life. This half of a stereograph belonged to a series titled *Gems of California Scenery*, meant to be seen through a stereoscope so the street appeared to have depth for parlor audiences. The 1866 publication date comes from old caption information and may be approximate.
