From the Russ House, this view turns toward the Occidental Hotel on Montgomery Street, one of the city's well-known hotels in its mid-1860s commercial core. Montgomery Street was the financial center of San Francisco during and after the Gold Rush, when the city grew quickly and its hotels served merchants, miners, and travelers arriving by ship. The Library holds only one half of this stereographic pair, issued as number 140 in a series of California scenery views. Viewed through a stereoscope with its companion image, it would have produced a three-dimensional effect.
