Standing at the corner of Sansome and Bush streets, the Cosmopolitan Hotel was one of the commercial buildings in San Francisco's busy downtown in the mid-1860s, less than two decades after the Gold Rush transformed the city. This albumen print is one half of a stereographic pair issued in the *Gems of California scenery* series as no. 178, and the Library of Congress holds only this half. Stereo views like this were sold widely and viewed through hand-held viewers, so they gave parlor audiences a three-dimensional look at city streets they might never visit. The date and caption details come from an older card and have not been fully verified.
