Sansome Street was one of the streets near the San Francisco waterfront, and this view shows it as it looked in 1850, during the first years of the gold rush. The picture is a color halftone reproduction, made between 1890 and 1940, of a watercolor by Frank Marryat, an English artist who sketched the rough, fast-growing town. Because the original was painted in the middle of the rush, when buildings went up almost overnight, it preserves a city changing from month to month. The printed version also shows how halftone reproduction turned a painted original into a mass-produced color image.
