Printed by P.S. Duval's steam lithograph press in Philadelphia and published in New York, this color view of San Francisco in 1850 was issued by the author of *Sights in the Gold Region*, a travel account of the mining country. The town it depicts had been transformed by the Gold Rush that began in 1848, when prospectors and merchants arrived by the thousands and turned a small former Mexican settlement into a crowded boomtown within a few years. Prints like this gave eastern buyers a vivid picture of that distant, fast-changing city.
