An aerial view taken around 1932 looks down on San Francisco and its bay from above, a vantage that was still novel for city photography in the early 1930s. Airplanes had only recently made such overhead pictures practical, and the bird's-eye angle lets the viewer read the peninsula's dense street grid, its hills, and the water that shaped the city's growth. The print is part of a group of 1930s aerial photographs held by the Library of Congress and was sent to the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C., a body then concerned with inter-American relations. Its survival in the Prints and Photographs Division makes it a useful record of how the city looked during the Great Depression.
