Captain Edwin Musick is at the controls of the Philippine Clipper, a Martin M-130 flying boat, in this close view over San Francisco Bay. The Clipper was one of Pan American Airways' flagship aircraft on its transpacific route, and it inaugurated the airline's San Francisco to Manila service in November 1935. Musick, a veteran Pan Am pilot, flew many of the early Pacific crossings before he died in a 1938 crash in American Samoa. The photograph captures the large flying boats that opened the Pacific to commercial air travel in the years before World War II.
