Looking east down California Street from the crest of Nob Hill, this stereograph carries the eye past the cable car tracks toward the Ferry Building and the bay beyond. The card dates to about 1907, roughly a year after the earthquake and fire of 1906 leveled much of the city, so rebuilding downtown would have been well underway when it was taken. H.C. White Co., a firm that produced stereo views for home parlor viewers, issued it as number 723 in its series. Cards like this were meant for a hand viewer, which gave the street a depth a flat print could not offer.
