The Call Building was the headquarters of the San Francisco Call, one of the city's major newspapers, and its tall, ornate tower made it a prominent landmark on Market Street. Completed in the late 1890s, it was among the largest office buildings of its day, reflecting the city's rapid growth after the Gold Rush and its appetite for a booming press. The building survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, which makes its early-twentieth-century appearance a useful record of the downtown streetscape before that disaster. The record's date of c1902 comes from a caption card and has not been independently verified.
